Living At The Birthplace Of Stilton Cheese
It’s been a little while since I posted on the blog, largely due to the fact that i’ve moved house in the last couple of weeks and am now living in Stilton (the birthplace of the cheese).
For the last 5 years I’ve lived in Peterborough City Centre and I thought it was time to move somewhere a little quieter now I no longer need to get to the train station everyday for the London commute. So I packed my bags and moved in with the girlfriend for the first time in our 4 1/2 years of being together and moved to the little village that is Stilton.
Quiet is one thing, but I may have gone a bit to far here. Population= less than 1000. We have only one shop and one post office, but on the up side there are 4 pubs, so I’m well catered for.
The locals are obviously very proud to live in Stilton and celebrate the fact Stilton cheese originated from here at every opportunity. We have a pub named the Stilton Cheese Inn, another pub has stained glass windows of… yes you guessed it, images of Stilton cheese. All the food on the menu’s come with Stilton cheese, whether you want it or not and whats more, once a year there’s even a Stilton Cheese rolling competition, where they erm, roll cheese through the streets from the looks of it.
I probably should keep to myself when I’m out and about that I actually really don’t like Stilton Cheese…
I do really like the village though, it’s very quiet, I’m sitting in my garden in the sun writing this, which after 3 years of living in a flat with no garden is a bit of a novelty.
Whilst walking to the shop the other day I saw a chicken just wondering around someones front garden, not in a cage or anything, just free to wonder into the traffic and cause chaos, this tells you a lot about the place I’ve just moved to.
So lets start with the thumbs up to companies who have made my move easy:
http://www.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband - The only company out of O2, Vodaphone, Orange Three and T-mobile to be able to cover my new sleepy village location with mobile broadband was Three. No fuss, no hassles and good speeds for the last 2 weeks. Good work guys.
http://www.pipex.co.uk - Well done Pipex for sorting my broadband connection out at great speeds, 10 days from my phone call and we’re raring to go.
http://www.wilkinsonplus.com - Ordered our new garden furniture from Wilkinsons, delivered on the day they said at 8.30am, good stuff.
http://www.connection-fitness.co.uk - I’d never ordered from Connection Fitness before but their customer service and delivery was as I’d expect. Ordered my new Free Standing for Reebok Freestanding Boxing Tube Trainer from them on next day delivery and came the next day at 11am, great service.
And thumbs down to those who love to cause me hassle:
http://www.europcar.co.uk - I’d left hiring a van to move the stuff later than I’d hoped for and found myself out near their offices so popped in to sort it out in person to be told “go home and order it online, its much cheaper”, this I must say is extremely annoying. If I’m at your office and I want to buy something your selling, don’t send me away in the hope that I’ll log onto your website and follow your advice, this is how you lose customers! There are few excuses for offering to hire me a van cheaper if i buy online than if i’m at your office, the logistics are the same for you, the payment processing fee will be about the same, there really are very few excuses. At the very least type my details into your bloody website whilst I’m sitting in your office…
Europcar then took £200 from my account as a *deposit* and returned it when we returned the van. Again this is just odd, take my credit card details and hold them in-case I bring it back in a mangled mess, there was no real need to actually remove the money from my account now was there. I won’t use these guys again, far too much hassle.
http://www.dfs.co.uk - When i’m trying to spend £700 with you for a new sofa, don’t get all stressy about whether I want to take out fabric protection spraying stuff. If i choose not to have it, that is my prerogative. Extremely poor show from the Peterborough store who would have lost a sale had my girlfriend who had fallen in love with the sofa not been with me. Here’s hoping your delivery goes a lot smoother in a couple of weeks….
That’s all. Overall the move has been pretty smooth and i’ll be back causing chaos on the blog in no time.

Glad to see you moving closer to London (though only by a couple of miles!) Stilton, despite not ranking for the term “cheese”, sounds like quite a nice place, hope you and your girlfriend enjoy it.

Well I see them on page 2, so you’re already having an effect!
I’ve been lucky with flights, to be honest, managed to get the last one alright. If I miss a few more, there may be a serious business case for a private jet :))
