Posted by Paul Smith on Thursday, April 15th, 2010

I blogged a little while back about one of our team (Kelly Frew) taking part in the London Marathon, and my how time has flown, it’s only 10 days away now! So for the final time here is our plea, Kelly is running to raise money for the Cardiomyopathy Association. Cardiomyopathy, which literally means “heart [...]

London Marathon Sponsorship

No, i’m not silly enough to dig out my running shoes and take on 26 1/2 gruelling miles of London’s streets along with a whole bunch of other like minded crazy people. That said, one of our own Miss Kelly Frew has decided that this is the year she will be taking on the challenge [...]

Did Derren Brown Stick You To Your Sofa?

Posted by Paul Smith on Friday, September 18th, 2009

So tonight Derren Brown told me he was going to stick me to my sofa, not just me but the whole nation through their TV screens.

Success rate was apparently 50% in the studio, but despite me following the instructions and doing everything as asked, it didn’t work for me.

Did you watch it? And did Derren Brown stick you to your sofa?

I’d be interested in hearing from anyone who genuinely got stuck and their experience.

  1. Josh Says:

Didnt work for me, made me feel a little faint during the film but that was about it :(

  2. Sam Says:

Not for me. It was really disappointing as well, seeing as he said all up to it he WOULD stick us to our seats.

  3. Sam Says:

Oh just out of curiosity. Did anyone notice the flashed images before and after the video began, even though derren said he wouldnt use flashing images?

  4. James Says:

He said there were no flashing images in the film … didn’t stick me to the seat but made my legs go funny and i couldn’t stand up properly :/ weird

  5. Charley Says:

Yes I did.. It was a black and white drawing of a man (I think maybe Derren?) tied to a chair??? I also noticed lots of flashing but couldn’t see anything else..Oh and not sticking for me – not even remotely.

  6. Sage Says:

I’m not sure that hardly anyone stuck – google the Geller Effect more more details. If you go on TV and tell people you’re going to make their watches stop, then have people call in if there watch has stopped, you’re bound to get a couple of people whose watch has either stopped or want to fulfill the role being laid out by the presenter (eg as Derren Brown said “if you’ve got a well-balanced, creative personality you will get stuck to your sofa”). And, sorry viewers, we’ve only got time for 3 calls, but trust me, the switchboard is jammed. This seems a reasonable explanation, but not as clever as hix usual tricks so I hope there’s more to it

  7. Anna Says:

I had a weird feeling in my hands, but didn’t stick :(

  8. Tony Says:

I was a skeptical to this before the show went out. However, I have it saved in Sky + and have tried it 5 times. Twice it worked, most notably when the room was pitched black. I was unable to get up for approx 3 minutes.

  9. kevf Says:

honestly guys, i think you all questioned it abit to much, i sat right infront of my tv and after a drink i was thiking the ‘it wont work’ but i let that go, and im being completely honest, it was crazy, there was times i had a chair leg off the ground cos of my strugling, i wish it had worked for you guys, it was so POWERFULL for me!

  10. Mike Says:

Worked for me two times out of two. Totally frozen apart from my head rotating. You have to be willing for it to work in the first place and accepting of the idea or your brain won’t switch off. Apparently the images are a man on a chair at the start then by the end the man is tied up. Makes your subconsious think you are tied down, so no matter how much I conciously thought ‘get up’ I couldn’t for a few minutes until that calming video came on.

  11. Clare Says:

    I stuck – couldn’t move a thing !

    Wasn’t panicky but a feeling I really didn;t like !
Still feel now like I’ve been hit by a truck !!

Not a massive DB fan up to tonight and was 100% sceptic – really REALLY wierd !

  12. Georgia Says:

I was desperate for this to work, and was so very disappointed when it didnt when the show went out live, but then i did have my daughter laughing, the computer on and the light on.
So I sky+ it and did it later on, in pitched black, no computer to distract and no children, and on my SIXTH attempt i truely believe i was stuck!! I could not move away from that damn chair no matter how much i tried!! Brilliant experience!!

  13. richard walker Says:

it didnt work the first time i watched it but one hour later on 4+1 i watched it again then it worked stuck fast to the sofa!

  14. Brett Lewis Says:

well I had a few problems trying to get up, my arms burnt and had some pains in my chest, it was kind of a scary experience, my partner thought i was joking and she felt my heart beat and it was beating a bit too much. lol.

  15. Maria Says:

I dont think its so much about believing in it and being open to it. . .

I love Derren Brown and have every faith in his abilities.

I really really wanted to stick last night. And I didnt. Im really quite upset about this! My husband however DID stick.

Did anyone notice the adverts before the film . . . the first advert was of the Iphone . . . with the scrabble app. One of the words was “STUCK”. . . Coindidence???

  16. HelstonLad Says:

I had a glass of wine during the first part of the show and was suitably relaxed and very much looking forward to the finale and i wasn’t disappointed. I think because i was relaxed and open to the suggestions it worked a treat. my left hand was stuck fast to my leg and my right hand could only raise about 2 inches off my other leg. It felt as though someone had tied a belt around my waist and nailed it to the sofa. When i tried to fight it it only made it worse. A very strange but great experience..

  17. Aurora Says:

First time it didn’t work, but when we rewound to watch again, it did. It felt like it would take far too much effort to get up, so I remained stuck to the sofa instead.

  18. Jay Says:

It worked for me, couldn’t move from my knees to my lower back. I really tried to stand up but just couldn’t. Lasted a few minutes.

My 15 year old son thought it was very funny, he was watching from the side and not taking part.

    I love Derren Brown, brilliant.

  19. lisa Says:

I stuck…..my daughter and hubby didn’t, I just let go of control and relaxed…it worked very well and It felt amazing – I was very sceptical…but now converted!

  20. Ellie Says:

I was stuck fast both times it felt so weird.

  21. Amy Says:

Yep, worked for me! Not the 1st time (I got the giggles) but when I was alone and watched again on C4+1. Its so hard to explain, my back wasnt stuck. or my feet, it was more I couldnt straighten my legs and my thighs were stuck. Throughout the whole thing I never once felt scared, and when he played the release tone I felt so relaxed and went back to normal. Amamzing really. I saw Engima in Kent and at a certain part in the show he definaltely had “influence” over me, without giving too much away! My husband, however, thinks I faked it, and says he’ll believe it when it happens to him.

  22. Autumn Says:

I didn’t stick, but I started to giggle in a really high voice.XD

  23. Henry Says:

I didn’t get stuck but i felt really heavy. When i did stand up i still felt heavy and had to sit down again for a couple of mins before i felt normal

  24. Cole Says:

Yeah I didn’t stick, but I think it’s because after reading his book, I’m too aware of how it’s done for it to work on me. He hinted at the method at the end of the show when he said it wasn’t subliminal, just suggestion.

If you don’t want the sticking effect to be potentially ruined, don’t read the next paragraph. Do, however, read the last one.

The tape of the rotating lines didn’t actually have hidden messages in it, and wasn’t what was causing the sticking. Throughout the programme he had been priming the audience to feel stuck, and those who are more “open and susceptible” (read: gullible) believed that the video would have a profound effect on them, so of course, they felt a profound effect.

When people say they are “skeptical” about Derren Brown it’s mostly from a misunderstanding of what he does; he never claims to do magic or mind reading and says it at the start of all of his programmes, he usus suggestion and misdirection in very clever ways to produce baffling effects. He is basically a highly skilled psychologist, so there is nothing to be skeptical of, he never claims that what he does is real.

  25. James Says:

I could feel my self being stuck to my seat even before the film was played.

  26. Fletch Says:

Didn’t work for me at all but I’m a total sceptic. Also I actually saw the flashing image of the man in his chair at the beginning then at the end he was tied up. It was an old fashioned man on a wooden chair with his hands and feet tied.

Anyone but me think this was misadvertising??

  27. Nikki Says:

I never felt stuck or tied down to the sofa as such, more as though my bum was wedged into the sofa, I had to get my partner to pull me up, when I stood up my legs were like jelly.

Personally, I think that the fact that we were to remain very still and barely move our heads played a bit part in the act, as well as the video of the rotating lines, for the lines may have made us feel a bit dizzy. So the feeling we had when we tried to stand up was merely dizziness and from sitting perfectly still for x amount of time.

I am not critising Derren’s work, for i think he is a genius. I just think that it is pure mind games and all our own doing.

  28. Rob Says:

I have to say I did it the first time and was very sceptical and true enough stood up straight away……but then I was disappointed, so I rewound and tried again, this time turned off the lamps and didn’t have the distraction of the cat meowing as happened the first time and wow I was stuck. No real feeling of pushing down, but there was no way I could stand up more than a few inches, tried at least 6 times, then relaxed a while tried again and broke it.
Going to try again tonight :-)

  29. andy Says:

It worked for me amazing!! it cannot be fake!! IT WORKED FOR ME!

  30. Jane Says:

I got to stuck to the sofa!!! It was sooooo weird and i got slightly hysterical but I literally couldn’t lift myself off the sofa and when i got almost out i didn’t went to get off it. I was the only one out of 4 of us who couldn’t get up. Was good fun though :D

  31. Paul Says:

Captured the image… its interlaced so appears mixed with the previous frame.

  32. Kathryn Says:

It worked for me and I went in totally skeptical. It was a really weird feeling. No pain or tingling or anything like that, just my legs refusing to work. I wasn’t scared or panicking, just laughing and in a state of disbelief. Absolutely brilliant.

  33. Reza Says:

well unsurprisingly it didnt work for me or my dad. the videos showing it worked for people is fake. even the audiance in the studio who got stucked were fooled. this is how i think he’s done it:

A powerful magnet was installed under the chairs which would attrack any metal thing which people had with them,i.e. wallet’s button, pant’s buttons that are made out of iron. that made those people think darren brown’s video stuck them to their chairs.

now what do you think of my theory?

  34. John Says:

I wonder if it would work on Stephen Hawkins?…
