No, i’m not silly enough to dig out my running shoes and take on 26 1/2 gruelling miles of London’s streets along with a whole bunch of other like minded crazy people. That said, one of our own Miss Kelly Frew has decided that this is the year she will be taking on the challenge [...]

Derren Brown - How To Be A Psychic Spy - Did You Get The Image Right?

Posted by Paul Smith on Friday, September 25th, 2009

So following on from my recent coverage of Derren Browns new series, tonight in his programme “how to be a psychic spy” Derren tried to get the whole nation (or those of us who watch his programme at least) to guess an image that was drawn a week ago by a random person called Katie and has been sat in the national science museum all week covered up.

Quite simply your supposed to use remote viewing to be able to see the image and not the subliminal suggestions he’s probably been plugging throughout his programme.

The biggest percentage of guesses from people who guessed at the museum and in the audiance on the night was a set of concentric circles 9imagine an archery target) with over a third of each giving the same drawing. Interestingly quite a lot of people also drew Stonehenge, which about 10% of people drew, so not a bad set of averages.

In light of his recent efforts this is actually quite impressive, until you hear his theory….

His last sentence was that he had actually filmed the recording a week ago and knew a week in advance the result so he had a week to try and get us all to draw concentric circles. He did this by placing an ad in every major newspaper  today telling us to do so.

Well I have toady’s newspaper, The Daily Mirror and I’m looking on page 10 (which they told us it would be on) and the closest I’m seeing to concentric circles is a tyre advert. Or did i get the page wrong?

As always I’ll dig out the videos and post them as and when I come across them, but the solution for why everyone at home will have got close is a lot clearer than any of the newspaper rubbish.

Derren showed us last week how he can get people in a building to do something with subliminal messages being placed around (with his giraffe trick at Hamleys), so how about the people at home?

Notice how the cameras focused on her eyes, with her pupils dilated due to the bright light that was being shone into her face?

Concentric circles … eyes ….   (*sigh*)  NEXT!

Did you get the image right?

I got 3 cirlces but not concertic. I got them in a line and another drawing of just a circle on it’s own.

I do not read newspapers. I haven’t for about a week now. I’m still at school so I dont come across them every day .

    Pretty cool though :)

  2. Vixy Says:

I also go to school so I rely on bbc news much more than newspapers.. Still, there seemed to be a lot of subliminal messaging in that show, (the eyes, posters in the background etc.)

Instead I drew a shrimp wearing a pair of rollerblades..?!
God know where that came from?!

Buuut, can anyone tell me about the whole stone-henge thing? Like, that woman revealed how she had imagined a birds-eye view of it, so how did Derren get people to think of stone henge? >.<

  3. Laura Says:

There’s a small advert saying ‘DRAW CONCENTRIC CIRCLES’ …
The page must be wrong, it’s in the mail on p82.

  4. Paul Smith Says:

Yea I just managed to find the ad in the Mirror, it’s page 10 of the ticket supplement not page 10 of the main paper. Indeed it is there.

  5. Jane Says:

I had the Times and I have scruitinised the page over and over again and I can’t find anything to do with concentric circles on it. Unless I have the wrong page too?

  6. msimp Says:

where is the one in the mirror i have searched that page for age and cannot find it.!

  7. Sam Says:

Was it in The Sun? If so, what page?

  8. lee Says:

  9. Adam casey Says:

I drew a dohnut, which is basically a 2 concentric circles

  10. tom Says:

lol it actually says “DRAW CONCENTRIC CIRCLES” in a big box on page 10 of the tickets supplement i read the newspaper earlier yet never even noticed this its so strange

  11. Lee S Says:

page 70 of the sun… says draw concentric circles

  12. lucie Says:

I drew steps going up, a flower, an elephant and the turretts of a castle so not sure where all those came from but nothing like concentric circles!

  13. phil Says:

what page is it in the times?

  14. Tom Says:

In the SUN look at page 70 and theres a little ad saying DRAW CONCENTRIC CIRCLES. Dont take much notice of that page so i doubt anyone else does!
Drew loads of spiral like sqiggles which i thought looked a bit like circles

  15. ChilliMasta Says:

I liked the stunt but the picture drawn was not the girl’s.

It was a fraud, there were 2 pictures.

When Derren gives her the board there are two sides. One is brown the other is white with a lip.

When the picture is revealed the news paper covers the white side with the lip, but when she brings the board into the museum she is carrying the board via the lip and the brown side of the board is covered with news paper.

    So this is a summary.

she is given the board we can see what it looks like
she comes into the museum with the board and the news paper is on the brown side and she is carrying it via the white side
she gives the covered board to the security guard. At this point the white side is facing away from the camera and the brown side is facing the camera with newspaper over it.
But!!! when the picture is revealed the white side was covered with news paper and is now facing the camera.

She wouldn’t of been able to carry it the way she was (by holding the lip on the white side) with out breaking the news paper so they switched the paper on the sides so she could carry it in.

confusing but if you watch the video and make sure you’re looking at what side she is holding you can notice that the newspaper swaps sides.

  16. Ediz Says:

Yes it was in The Sun, on page 70

  17. Nicola Says:

I drew a snail (concentric circles?) and Stonehenge. I even wrote Stonehenge next to it! Very strange.

  18. james francis Says:

is page 70 of the english sun different than the scottish sun
because i cant see it all i see is an arnold clark advert

  19. james francis Says:

i drew concntric circles and a massive ear

  20. justme Says:

i drew a circle, a car, a bicycle, stairs, flower, aeroplane and a bannana.

  21. Paige Says:

Why you may have drawn 3 concentric circles with strikes, even if you hadn’t read any newspapers over the last 3 weeks. Study the eyes, consciously looking at the shapes: http://twitpic.com/jadk5

  22. james Says:

Derren Brown is a magician! His slant on the medium is slightly different in that he uses mind control and subliminal messages etc but he is essentially a magician like David Blaine or Paul Daniels. Most of the stunts are ‘tricks’ and we must remember that rather than finding a solution to them and then branding him a fraud! OF COURSE HE DIDN’T GUESS THE LOTTERY, OF COURSE DAVID BLAINE CAN’T LEVITATE! Its just good entertainment. The sooner people realise that he is essentially a magician with some cool skills then the sooner we can enjoy all this for what it is……..TRICKS OF THE MIND!!

  23. Pal Says:

    Hey
ChilliMasta, I don’t think I can agree with you - I’ve checked out the video and can see no sign of a switch.
I think that he has done his usual thing of mind control to instruct her of what to draw. what I think has occured is that, at the river bank, he draws certain symbols with his hands while talking to her:
you can see him sweep his hand across (while holding paint brush in right hand), we then cut to her - i expect that he here draws Stonehenge in the air; while he says “wrap it up…” he draws a circle with brish; and finally he presents two fists - it has to be speculation because it is out of vision, but i wonder if he has again swept his hand across (representing top of the monument) and followed this with the the fists representing the pillars.
This could easily be replicated in the museum, or even outside, as was shown last week with the Giraffe thing and the giving thing.
That said, still a good piece of TV; we’ve not mentioned the mirroring - that was still impressive, even with the explaination!

  24. Rev. Lynn DeLellis Says:

This all trivializes true intuitive mind and makes it just another show biz trick.

  25. Jay Says:

I drew a childish looking sun. I’ve read what ‘ChilliMasta’ wrote but don’t see how that makes a difference, unless she ran all the way from where she was to draw on the back of the board [which was in plain sight anyway...] and then run back with none of us noticing but catching a glimpse? …I dunno…

  26. jake Says:

plz do me a favor and post a pic of said advert if you indeed can see it or better yet the full page :) my mum binned it :(

  27. Macie Says:

Actually, right before he was telling us to draw, he mentioned picturing certain monuments very quickly, and that might have caused numerous people to get the hint of writing the stone henge. Ultimately relating to Pal said about him influencing the crowd.

    just my thoughts…

  28. Jim - Senior Citizien Says:

I’m researching this whole thing at moment. Need to read up on it big time!
